Between 1845 and 1848, the Marx family lived in Brussels. During his stay, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote several books, including the Communist Manifesto. This became the basis of world socialism.

This walk takes us through the centre of Brussels along the streets and squares where Marx stayed and worked.
The walk is also an immersion in the very young Belgium, which had just become independent. At a time of unbridled capitalism, this tiny country was the world’s second-largest industrial power!

Unwelcome in Germany and France because of his ideas, Karl Marx went into exile in Brussels in 1845, at that time a haven for revolutionaries. Belgium offered him a residence permit “on condition that he did not publish on the current political situation”. Marx, accompanied by his friend Engels, nevertheless wrote one of the key works of his life as a philosopher: The Communist Manifesto!

The ferment of the city, its revolutionary breeding ground, but also the capitalist turn that society was taking would make Marx’s stay in Belgium a turning point in his thinking and in his work.

This walk takes us through the centre of Brussels along the streets and squares where Marx lived and worked.
